Welcome to Merrylee Primary
School's Parent Council website.
The Scottish Schools
(Parental Involvement) Act 2006 has changed the arrangements for
parental representation in all schools. The act recognizes that
parents have a vital role to play in their children’s education and so
aims to make it easier for parents to become involved in their own
child’s education and in their child’s school more generally. Since
August 2007, all parents of Merrylee Primary School are
automatically members of the Parent Forum for our school.
The Parent Council is a small group of parents and carers who represent
the views and interests of the Parent Forum. The Parent
Council came into being in September 2007, and takes over the
functions of the former School Board. The Parent Council is the
representative voice of all the parents in Merrylee Primary School.
This web-site has been
launched to help you make contact with Parent Council members, learn
about their work on your behalf, read minutes and communications and
always be informed of when the next Parent Council meeting will be.
We
are here to help you, the school and your children!
Meetings of the Parent
Council are open and you are most welcome to attend as we’ll actively
look to you for input, ideas and support. The Parent
Council is particularly keen to make sure you are fully involved in your
child’s education and meeting with the Parent Council is one way of
doing that.
The
Objectives of the Parent Council are:
-
u To work in partnership with the
school to create a welcoming school which is inclusive for all
parents and carers.
-
u To promote partnership between the
school, its pupils and all its parents and carers.
-
u To develop and engage in activities
which support the education and welfare of the pupils.
-
u To identify and
represent the views of parents on the education provided by the
school and other matters affecting the u
education and welfare of the pupils.
-
u To support and encourage the
activities of the Parents Association which is a sub-committee of
the Parent Council.

Current Fundraising Project
The
pupils of Merrylee Primary School are extremely lucky as not only have
they
moved into a fabulous new school building but also
the new school incorporates a natural play environment within the
playground. Merrylee Primary is the first school in Glasgow, and
indeed in the UK, to have such a natural play environment which started
as an idea discussed between the head teacher and a member of the
forestry commission. The idea went from a dream to a reality which
Merrylee Parent Council fought and worked
hard for.
What this means is that the
school has an area within its playground for natural play allowing
children to connect with the natural environment; create their own play;
increase levels of activity and develop social and interpersonal skills.
The Pupil Council
of the school decided on the name 'Urban Jungle'.

This is a unique and wonderful opportunity for
Merrylee Primary.
The project will be used as a
pilot which will form a template for future playgrounds at schools in
the Glasgow area and will inform future natural play developments in
school playgrounds throughout Scotland. Go to the
'Urban Jungle'
page to see photographs of the project developing.

How Can You Help?
We are
therefore looking for any financial assistance that we
can get to allow us to complete this project. The
completed play area will serve as a blueprint for future
playgrounds and will be an incredible asset for the
pupils of Merrylee Primary.
We therefore hope you can
help us to enable this wonderful and unique project
reach completion by providing whatever assistance you can.
Please go to our 'news'
page for fundraising initiatives that we have
signed up to or the
'donate'
and 'sponsorship' pages for more details of how you can donate
directly to the project.
