From: Kellie Bell, Mum of Leila P1a    04.04.10

Hi there,  I wanted to write a note of thanks to the Merrylee parent council and in particular Louisa Khane.

I contacted the school as I was moving from London and needed advice and information on what the situation would be for my daughter who had already started primary education in England.

I sent my initial email on a Sunday and was not expecting a response until the next working day, I was surprised to get a response within a couple of hours from Louisa who detailed all the information I needed to know. She even spoke to the head to confirm there was a space for Leila in the class. Leila's school was obviously a major factor in completing the move or not. The response I received from Louisa was just what I needed to put my mind at rest. It portrayed a positive, caring and professional attitude, which I assumed was the aim of the school and just what I was looking for.

I have nothing but praise for Louisa and am extremely grateful that there was a parent council in place to look after such enquiries. The fact that Louisa is a parent of children in the school ensured that she understood my worries and the answers I expected which I do not feel would have been the case had someone not been in the same position as Louisa.

Thank you so much Louisa and everyone on the council for all the hard work and effort you put into looking after our school and children, I am sure without you we would not have such a special environment for our children to learn and grow.

From: Angela, Mum of Freya P1    05.03.10

Hello, I reported a serious traffic incident this morning to the school and they suggested I also notify the Parent Council so that you can log the complaint.
This morning (Friday 5th March) myself, two other mums and  five children were trying to cross the road at the corner of Monreith and Friarton road.
The road was busier than usual with cars and they started to back up along Friarton.  We did however eventually manage to cross and while walking
down Friarton Road towards the school (with the tennis club on the RHS) a female driver fully mounted the pavement ahead of us.  I had to sprint to
stop the two younger children who were slightly ahead of the group on their scooters. Had the children been slightly further ahead who knows what might
have happened. When I challenged the driver her response was 'what else am I meant to do, where else am I meant to go".  It was a very shocking disregard for the safety of the children.

This route to school has always been problematic in terms of safety - indeed my youngster daughter has previously been knocked off the pavement by the
sheer numbers of children and adults  jostling to get past on the pavement.  This and the sheer number and speed of cars which drive down Friarton road
leaves me very concerned about the safety of children en-route to school.  I do not want to see an accident happen before the situation changes. My
partner complained to the local councillors about the road traffic situation and I am certainly happy to discuss this further with anyone from the parent council.   Regards,Angela

Answer from Ruth, chair of PC  05.03.10

Hi Angela,
Thanks for letting us know about this incident - what an irresponsible way to drive, and what a poor response from the driver! It was lucky no one was hurt.

We are going to keep a file of incidents of this nature as evidence in our current campaign to make the area around the school safer for all pedestrians, particularly the children. I will also speak to Bailie McNally about it on Monday at the school opening ceremony.
Did you happen to get a note of the driver's license plate number?

When the parent council carried out a week of very visibly monitoring (with a camera) the driving behaviour around the school, there was a noticeable
improvement in safety. It may be that this is something we have to do on a more regular basis - I'll put it on the agenda for the next parent council
meeting. We may need to think about asking the wider parent body to help out with monitoring, possibly recording the license plates of anyone who is
clearly driving/parking their vehicle dangerously, and passing that information on to the police.

If you'd like to feed into that discussion, Angela, you are welcome to come along to the next meeting of the parent council, which will be on Monday
29th March, at 7 pm in the school. Best regards, Ruth Doherty

From: Kirsten Bruce 12.02.10

Hello, I’m a former Merrylee pupil (Mrs Fishwick’s P7 class in 1985/86!), now working in fundraising.  I was researching a particular charitable trust via Google and was intrigued when Merrylee’s website came up in the results.  Digging a bit further, I saw the page detailing your efforts for funding/resources for the Urban Jungle – and the photos, which look great!

If you need further donations of wildflowers, etc, can I suggest you contact the Central Scotland Forestry Trust?  Last year they gave the Craighalbert Centre a load of bluebell bulbs for our new Learning Garden, and were also happy to provide advice on planting, etc, for the children’s gardening project.  I think the bulb donation was part of this: http://www.csft.org.uk/savetheweebees/weebees_update_2010  I hope that information may prove useful.  Even if Merrylee doesn’t fall within the designated CSFT area, I’m sure they’ll be able to point you in the direction of a similar organisation.

And if the school is ever looking to undertake charity/fundraising activities for outside organisations as part of its Enterprise or PSD units, please do check out our website at www.craighalbert.org.uk!  Best, Kirsten

Answer from Louisa, parent member of PC 16.02.10

Hello Kirsten,
How nice of you to get in touch. Mrs. Fishwick still teaches in Merrylee, in fact, my daughter is currently in her P1 class! If you go to the 'news' page of the website you will see Mrs Fishwick directing the choir on the first picture of the 'Urban Jungle' opening day.
I am so pleased to hear that you enjoyed our site and thank you for the weebees link. I will personally follow this up. It is certainly something we would be interested in. I will let you know if we receive anything from it.
I will let Mrs Fishwick know that she is still remembered by a past pupil and I will also pass your e-mail to our headteacher re: enterprise/psd units.
Thanking you again,

From: Lorraine Taylor  11.11.09

Please note that it has come to my attention that for the past several days the entrance gate to the school has not been supervised.    When the change was made to have the Primary 1 pupils enter by the side gate we were advised at the AGM that this gate was always supervised, and

this clearly is not the case.   My fear is that a child could come out of the gate after being dropped off by parents or worse still someone could enter the school grounds.

I would welcome your comments in this regard as I feel this is an issue of safety and I, along with some of the other parents I have spoken to, feel that this gate should be manned at all times and that this should be put into effect on a daily basis.

Answer from Louisa, parent member of PC 12.11.09

Dear Mrs. Taylor,

Thank you for contacting the Parent Council to raise your concerns. I also have a child in P1 so I fully understand the worries you have expressed.

I have contacted Mrs. Mahindru, Headteacher, passing on your query about the supervision of the entrance gate in the mornings. She has replied today after investigating the issue with all concerned and I have attached her reply (reply supplied) which I hope addresses your concerns and reassures you

and other parents, that the entrance is being supervised as promised at the AGM. Hopefully you will have noticed a more obvious presence at the gate this morning.

Hi All,
Just like to say I think this is a super idea.  Hope more schools follow suit.  A lot of children live in the 'concrete jungle' so to have such a project at school makes them aware of life outside the city!
Congratulations to all who put the time and effort in to make such an excellent learning area.

Answer from Louisa, parent member of PC
Thank you for getting in touch and giving us such wonderful support and positive feedback. You have highlighted the very essence of the project and I hope you continue to follow the progress of the 'Urban Jungle' through our website.

From: Mel Unkles  18.07.09

I have been meaning to contact you for ages, so apologies for the delay!

My daughter Evie is starting primary 1 in August 2009 and I am keen to get involved with the parent council / parent association in any way I can. I would be grateful if you could get back to me and let me know how I can be of assistance! Many thanks

Answer from Ruth, Chair of Merrylee PC

Hi Mel,

Thanks for your enquiry - we are always very pleased when parents want to get involved! Our next meeting is on Monday August 31st  at 6.30pm in the conference room in school - I look forward to seeing you there! (check the home page for date of next PC meeting)

Answer from Sharon, Treasurer of Merrylee PC & PA Chair

Hi there. It would be fantastic if you could join the PA as we always welcome new members and lots of new ideas.  We have our meetings the last Wednesday of every month and our AGM this year (2009) is to be at the end of September so come along and you will be more than welcome.

From: Isobel Neil, mum of Stewart P7

I really sympathize with Mrs Mahindru's concerns about pick up and drop off at the new school.  I wonder if, as well as Mrs Mahindru describing what not to do and where else to park within 4 mins of the school, if this could be displayed in a good quality colour A3 size map that could be distributed to current parent / carers and be available to new parents / carers to the school.

Also, I'm sure that you will have already raised the issue of the local bus service passing in front off the school at 3pm just when school is finishing for the day which doesn't help matters.

I hope that Mrs Mahindru gets a good response to  her message in the recent newsletter

Best Wishes,

Answer from Ruth, Chair of Merrylee PC

Hi Isobel,

Thank you very much for your excellent suggestions. We will definitely be looking at both providing maps and contacting the bus service: I'll let you know what response we get. Thanks!

From : Donna Liyanage

It is a very good idea to have a comment page so that people,  especially the community, can express their thoughts and comments.  Today I had an opportunity go into the school and have a look around simply because my friend Sharon ask me to come along to the Scottish fund raising event.  But a lot of people around the school do not have children attend the school  so they are not aware of these fund raising events. You could distribute a small leaflet or something like that  about these fund raising event or you could hang a big banner outside the school so that the public are aware of these events.  This is a small suggestion. Thanks

Answer from Ruth, Chair of Merrylee PC

Hi Donna,

Thanks for posting a comment on the parent council website.

I think you have a very good point about publicising fundraising events and I will raise the issue with the PC and also pass on to the PA, to look at for the future. Thanks!
